For many years the District Attorneys Office has not taken animal abuse cases seriously. These cases must be given the attention they deserve and prosecuted in an appropriate manner. The pain and suffering inflicted on these animals is a crime and should be handled as such. History and research has shown many violent offenders started their violent actions on animals, before moving onto people. By prosecuting animal cruelty, we are afforded the opportunity to intervene and stop this behavior from escalating any further and sending a clear message we will not tolerate inhumane treatment towards animals.Evidence of animal abuse can lead to the discovery of many other crimes such as domestic violence, child abuse, elder abuse, homicide, and sexual assault.Abusing animals creates a culture of normalizing violence and is often seen in domestic violence situations. 71 of domestic violence victims reported their abuser also abused their pets.Children who witness animal cruelty are 8 times more likely to become a perpetrator of violence. 88 of families being investigated for child abuse also had findings of animal abuse.Men with a history of abusing animals are 5 times more likely to have been arrested for violence towards Tulsa County needs a District Attorney who understands animal cruelty is a problem and must be dealt with swiftly and judiciously. As District Attorney, Jenny Proehl-Days office will work with animal advocacy agencies and non-profits to decrease the frequency of animal cruelty and neglect cases occurring and prosecute these cases appropriately.
