Carlsbads Christmas season is officially underway following Saturdays Night of Lights and Electric Light Parade. Ashly Key Carlsbad MainStreet, Mary Garwood Keep Carlsbad Beautiful, Kat Davis Pearl of the Pecos, Maria Cole United Way of Eddy County and Dianne Joop Creative Carlsbad all worked hard to organize the Nov. 27 events, as did many other volunteers from these organizations. Its an honor to be able to flip the switch starting the light parade and the lighting of the Halagueno Arts Park. Thanks again to the Boys Girls Club of Carlsbad for helping us with the ornaments this year.Theres a lot of celebration left during the upcoming months. Christmas on the Pecos is now taking place through Dec. 31, but a large number of special events have been organized in celebration of the Chamber of Commerce events 30th year. There will be a very special night on Dec. 18 when the Winter Wine Festival is going to be held and Holly Tucker, who has been a great friend to Carlsbad for some time, will appear in concert. Other activities planned at the Pecos River Village include gaming weekend and foodie weekend. These activities are a lot of fun, but there are also a large number of charitable and church activities going on that really capture the true meaning of Christmas. The Carlsbad Police Department is currently holding a winter coat drive coats may be taken to or picked up at the police department, 602 W. Mermod St. The Police Department is also helping hold a fundraiser for the Special Olympics at Chilis on Dec. 9. A Shop With a Hero fundraiser drawing is going to take place on Dec. 16. Downtown, the Zia Bike and Board Shop has a Toy Run scheduled for Dec. 18. Ray Anayas Christmas Anonymous program is already underway, as are many other activities to help provide toys to children in need.Last week, J.R. Doporto helped host a fishing derby that raised money for the Boys Girls Club of Carlsbad. About 700 people registered, and the tournament raised 5,739 for the club. More than 2,500 in cash and prices were given away. Ryan Villapondo won one of the largest prizes for the kids, as did James Sanchez, Brenden Rodriguez and Justin Sanchez.
