As the annual volume of natural disasters including hurricanes, tornadoes, and floodscontinues to increase, devastated communities rely on disaster relief workers to help rebuild. A majority of the workforce for this growing industry are immigrants, many of whom are undocumented and incur serious mistreatment from employers due to their status, such as withholding pay or refusing to follow health and safety guidelines.Fernanda Herrera Spieler, our 2021 Text-to-Give Fellow, is working with host organization Resilience Force to combat immigration-related retaliation against disaster recovery workers in the South Im helping folks have the tools to fight for what they deserve. This work is an opportunity to help people know that they are humanand that their voices have power and deserve to be heard. Through education, legal representation, and policy change, Fellows including Fernanda are working diligently to provide access to justice to underserved communities across the country.
