Mesa pets introducing a new mule

Its springtime in Wyoming, and mule deer in the Red Desert have started migrating north on their 150-mile corridor. They always seem to surprise us with how far they go, so here is your change to join them on the migration trail. This spring were introducing a new mule deer doe nicknamed Jo as the star of our popular migration tracking program. Her name is short for Journey, and also a combination of Jet and Mo, in remembrance of the two other mule deer that many of you might recall following in past years, until each one died during winter.Throughout the spring, well release migration map updates on Jos location, and how far she has traveled. You can also get these posts at twitter.comwyo_migrations and Wed love your help in sharing the story of Jo the mule deer doe. We think she has a lot to teach all of us about migrating through wild country. All you need to do is like and share these posts, and tell your friends about this fun project.In this first update, we can see that Jo left winter range on March 22, and headed just a few miles north to her first stopover at South Table Mountain. This flat-topped mesa is the remnant of an old volcano where many mule deer stopover as they begin their migration north. Weve hiked out there, and its incredible to see the mule deer trails winding through the sage, coming from the south out of the Leucite Hills near the aptly-named berg of Superior, Wyoming. Even more incredible is that those trails extend for more than 100 miles north. Jo hung out at this stopover until April 6, grazing on the first shoots of springtime forage.Will she stay there longer, or make tracks north?
