Reposting another of the short biographies of leading Liberal Republicans from the 1970s. There were many Liberal Republicans through the 1970slong after Abraham Lincolns and Teddy Roosevelts eras. They were not RINOs any more than Lincoln or Roosevelt were, but rather members of a vibrant wing of the Republican Party dating back to Lincolns days.

The existence of this branch of the Republican Party is generally unknown to Americans under the age of fifty, and younger people often find the existence of such Republicans surreal. But our politics are SO STALE, a half a dozen to a dozen such Republicans in Congress could easily be the fulcrum on which a more pragmatic, consensus-oriented American politics could pivot.

Fenwick attended an elite school in Virginia but never received a high school or college degree, having left school to accompany her father to Spain where he served as the United States ambassador under President Calvin Coolidge. However, she studied at the New School for Social Research and Columbia University in New York, and spoke fluent Italian, French and Spanish. Before entering politics she modeled briefly for Harpers Bazaar magazine, then worked as a writer and editor for Vogue magazine for fourteen years.
