South Hill accounting western Pennsylvania factory and mining towns

Benny Shore had a bad morning, and it was a lot more than his late night carousing the night before. He forgot to completely close the back doors on the one-half-ton produce truck he was driving for his fathers business, Shore Wholesale Produce. As Benny drove the truck up the west hill on the way to deliver to neighborhood grocery stores, one of the trucks back doors opened. A dozen watermelons weighing about 15 to 20 pounds each, one by one, slowly rolled off the truck, landing smack in the middle of downtown Sharon, Pennsylvania.

Sharon is one of those small western Pennsylvania factory and mining towns that dot the landscape from Cleveland to Wheeling, West Virginia. With populations of 10,000 to 20,000, town residents are used to choking from the smell of coal dust and hot dirty air spitting from open hearth factory furnaces. This is the 1960s and early 1970s--before all the factories shut down and jobs headed south or overseas. In the middle of the night, it wasnt uncommon for residents to think their homes were ablaze only to discover the fire was nothing but the smelly air. At night, the sky glowed like a sunset, with flickering
shades of orange and red caused by steel mills pouring slagmolten iron waste.

Benny Shores father, Manny, was busy taking inventory at his wholesale produce warehouse on Railroad Street when Nan, secretary and bookkeeper, called him to the phone.Manny Nan shouted. Mayor Jefferson is on the phone.Manny heard the mayor clear his throat. Why are there a dozen watermelons splattered on East State Street in the middle of downtown? he said. Traffic is at a standstill and kids are running into the street, grabbing the broken melons and eating them on the sidewalks.
