Chesapeake doctor physical education certification at Harvard University

Dr. Edwin B. Henderson was the first to introduce basketball to African Americans on a wide scale organized basis. The sport had been invited by James Naismith in 1891. Henderson learned the game in 1904 while studying for his physical education certification at Harvard University, where he became the first African American male to be certified in the new emerging field. Henderson established the infrastructure by which African Americans went from exclusion from the sport to full participation and integration of the sport. He saw the basketball as a vehicle to achieve equality and Ivy League educations for African Americans.

Join AARP Virginia for an informative conversation with Dr. Hendersons grandson, Edwin B. Henderson, II, a local Falls Church, VA community historian and his wife, Nikki. Together, the work to raise awareness of Dr. Hendersons achievements and contributions to basketball which led to induction into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013. Henderson will share the early history of the birth of black basketball as well as the fascinating journey he and Nikki undertook that led to Dr Hendersons induction into the basketball hall of fame. This program will include video clips, vintage photographs, oral histories, and primary source documents to create a lively presentation on early black basketball.
