Cathedral City travel limited bus and airplane travel

In January 1966, a blizzard dumped about a foot of snow on Washington, D.C. The storm closed stores and roads in the city and limited bus and airplane travel. This photograph taken by James P. Blair on the South Lawn just outside the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden shows the White House Grounds covered in snow.In her diary entry on January 30, 1966, First Lady Lady Bird Johnson wrote about an outing with President Lyndon B. Johnson during the blizzard. Their Sunday began by leaving the White House to find Washington white and silent blanketed under eight inches of snow. The couple went to Red Mass at St. Matthews Cathedral with their daughter Luci Baines Johnson and her fianc Patrick Nugent the first lady noted the scarce number of people in attendance. Following mass, they visited with Jack Valenti, special advisor to the president, and his family at their house. Lady Bird recounted the hip-high snow at the Valentis house, writing, It was hilarious to try to walk through. I borrowed a pair of size twelve boots, stepped out of them and plunged laughing into the snow. After having hot coffee inside with the Valentis, the first family returned to the White House.
