PENSACOLA The community is invited to a series of events intended to highlight the progress of the LGBT community over the last four decades when PensacolaPRIDE 2018 kicks off on Saturday, June 16.PensacolaPRIDE 2018 starts with the Festival in the Park on Saturday, June 16, in Historic Seville Square and continues with a series of four additional events over the next seven days. The theme for PensacolaPRIDE 2018 is Forty Years Beyond the Rainbow.The rainbow flag was first designed and showcased as a positive symbol of the LGBT community in 1978 and has since come to represent our community around the globe, said Gay Grassroots President Louis Cooper. We are using this year to look at how LGBT culture has changed in our area in that time frame and to celebrate everything our beautiful flag represents.The Festival in the Park is set for Saturday, June 16, from 11 am to 6 p.m. Live entertainment is scheduled for all day. Highlights of the day include festival headliner Wayward Sisters, who perform at 1245 p.m. standup comic Andrew Ferrara performs at 130 p.m., and the Red Carpet Spectacular our traditional end-of-day drag show starts at 5 p.m.About 60 vendors, ranging from artists to businesses and political parties to non-profits, are signed up for the festival. For the third year in a row, the Lewis Bear Co., is the festivals beverage sponsor.PensacolaPRIDE 2018 continues with these eventsTuesday, June 19, 7 p.m. Generational Experiences, Hagler Auditorium, Pensacola State College. This is roundtable, panel discussion mixes college-aged LGBTs with mature members of the community, with audience input. Admission is free.Wednesday, June 20, 5 p.m. Mid-week PensacolaPRIDE Happy Hour, Chizoku, 506 W Belmont, downtown Pensacola. Raffles, give-aways and drinks. Admission is free.Thursday, June 21, 7 p.m. Literary Event, Artel Gallery, 223 Palafox Place. Dr. Jay Watkins, a visiting assistant professor at the College of William Mary, will read from his book, Queering the Redneck Riviera Sexuality and the Rise of Florida Tourism, published by the University Press of Florida. This event cosponsored by Artel Gallery. Admission is free.Saturday, June 23, 6 p.m. Celebration Ball, Pensacola Opera Center, 75 S Terragona St, downtown Pensacola. Four-course gourmet dinner with live entertainment provide by the Womens Ensemble of the Pensacola Choral Society. Tickets are 45 each purchased early 50 at the door.All of our events are open the public, Cooper said. We want everyone in the greater Pensacola area to come out to our events and learn a little about our local LGBT history and culture.
