If you havent been following Village Board activities for as many years as we have, you might be surprised to know that for years the village hasnt conducted organized performance reviews on village employees when pay increase time comes around.

Youd be wise to wonder, what did the village base salary increases on when they decided to give someone a raise? The answer is nothing.Sure, most of the time the budget just called for a percent across the board and its a pretty uniform process. However, from time to time, certain trustees - DeGroot, Havn, Hewitt and Clausen - just added increases for employees whenever they felt like it.

If it sounds to you like a situation ripe for a lawsuit - youd be right. Trustees were told many times to stop handing out raises without a fair and coherent process. They didnt listen.What happened? In late 2016, a couple of trustees - Havn, Hewitt and Degroot - forced a pay raise for the village clerk on a village board agenda. When it came up for a vote, the other trustees voted no because there had been no review or performance evaluation completed.
