I proceeded to make the case to immediately increase the homestead exemption to 20. Increasing the homestead exemption is one of a couple tools that City Council has in its toolbox to bring property tax relief. And while its true that the City is a smaller part of the property tax bill, for me this was never an excuse for inaction. With soaring appraisals again this year, even recently some intimated this action couldnt or possibly shouldnt be done.
Fast forward, and I am pleased to report that the City Council just unanimously adopted the largest increase to the homestead exemption in Kellers historybringing actual property relief to Kellers homeowners. Moving forward, the homestead exemption will be set at 20, which is the maximum allowed under state law.
For me, this action was absolutely necessary based on thousands of conversations with residents at their front door step. When I met a homeowner at their door who was in tears because of the skyrocketing property tax burden, it made a big impact. When I hear Kellers longtime residents being hit the hardest by the property tax burden, it makes a big impact.
