Most of the early 19th Century mining activity in Nevada was concentrated in the northern part of the state where railroads, water, and water power were generally available. The southern part of the state was largely uninviting to most prospectors. Very few mining districts developed in this area. There were exceptions, however, and Silver Peak was one of them.

Situated on the edge of an ancient lake bed approximately 40 miles south and east of, the now defunct, Candelaria and about 30 miles west of the future site of Goldfield today an unincorporated community and county seat of Esmeralda County, Silver Peak registered its initial production in 1863. The following year, the Great Salt Basin Mining Milling Company was organized. Three years later, two miles of grading had been completed for a proposed 8-mile railroad to connect the mines with the mill. The plan was discarded, however, in favor of a 1 mile surface tramway along the Drinkwater Trail whereon loaded cars drifted by gravity down to an ore bin, and mules hauled the empties back to the mine. From the ore bin at the base, enormous wagons, said to be the largest ever used in Nevada, transported the ore from the bin to the mill.
