Victorville cars surrounding sagebrush-covered hills

Today, except for a historical marker, its easy to miss Blair, Nevada. The town has almost blended back into the surrounding sagebrush-covered hills. In the afternoon sunlight, one must look sharply to see the few remaining remnants. The most notable ruin is a large concrete and brick skeleton of a building that still has a chimney. A smaller concrete building sits a few yards away. Parked in the desert between the two structures is the rusted hulk of an old car, which appears to be from the 1920s or 1930s.

Thankfully, the Blairstown Museum has this small, L. P. McKelvy coin to remind us that Blair, Nevada existed that it was once home to the luxurious Blair Hotel and that from its ashes Mr. McKelvey helped establish the booming casino economy in Lake Tahoe.

Elected to the U.S. Senate to serve out the term of Philander C. Knox, who had resigned to become Secretary of State under President Taft. In 1911, he notably helped reverse the United States Board on Geographic Names decision to spell the name of the city of Pittsburgh as Pittsburg back to the original spelling with the -h ending.
