At Covenant House Texas, we see so many Black children and youth who have lived in the ugly shadow of racism. We see the scars of racism and prejudice every day in the form of poverty, homelessness, and human trafficking. More than 60 of the young people we serve at Covenant House Texas are Black, even though Black Americans comprise only 13 of the population. Between disparities in healthcare 23 of people who have passed away because of COVID-19 were Black, incarceration Black Americans are incarcerated at more than 5 times the rate of whites, education Black young men have the lowest graduation rate of any population in the country, and, of course, police brutality Black people are 3 times more likely to be killed by the police than white people. The statistics are jarring. During moments like these, when trauma is triggered by acts of racism and a massive health crisis, our staff focuses on meeting each young person where theyre at, wrapping them with love, and upholding our promise of stability and sanctuary.You can help make a difference.
