Centennial travel bloodshed and cruelty were strongly felt

On June 17, 1885, the Statue of Liberty arrived in New York Harbor from France in 350 pieces. It was assembled and, in the fall of 1886, dedicated by President Cleveland. In 1876, the Statues hand, holding the torch, was sent to the United States and displayed at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. The twenty-year project was finally completed with monies raised by committees in France and United States.

What is now known as the War of 1812 began on June 18. Although an often forgotten war, the bloodshed and cruelty were strongly felt by civilians and combatants on land and sea. During the war, the White House and other federal buildings in Washington, D.C., were burnt by British forces. And, the bombardment by the British at Fort McHenry inspired the creation of our national anthem. Two and a half years later, the Treaty of Ghent was signed, formally ending the War of 1812.

Ride became the first American woman in space as part of the Space Shuttle Challenger crew. Ride and five other women had been selected in 1978 as the first American class of astronauts to include females. Ride completed a second Challenger launch a year later, but her third travel into space was canceled after the Challenger Disaster in 1986. Ride served on the board of inquiry investigating the Challenger Disaster, and after leaving NASA, became a professor of physics at the University of California. Ride died in 2012, at the age of 61, with pancreatic cancer.
