Amherst travel service between Greenfield and New Haven

The Recorder is reporting today that Sen. Jo Comerford and Rep. Natalie Blais are two of 10 regional legislators who have sent a joint letter to MassDOT asking for more equitable and fair fares on Amtraks Vermonter service, and on the planned new Amtrak service between Greenfield and New Haven.

The UMass Amherst Student Senate kicked off this discussion back in December 2018 when they passed a resolution in favor of fixed and equitable passenger rail fares in our region.What is missing from the article is the unfortunate fact that fares on the Vermonter are 30 higher than the fares listed if you do not book your ticket more than two weeks in advance.

This is because Amtrak is using a pricing concept they call revenue managed pricing. The concept sets fares as high as possible which in our view is not something that should be happening for a state-supported service such as the Vermonter.

The City of Amherst will conduct a one-hour public meeting on Monday, December 10, 2018 to gather public input in order to update Amhersts Safe Routes to School Travel Plan. The public meeting will be held at City Hall, 206 S. Main Street, Amherst, Ohio beginning at 600 pm to conclude by 700 pm for the regularly scheduled City Council meeting. The original School Travel Plan STP was developed in 2010 and is currently being updated.
