Winter in the Black Hills is truly an unforgettable experience that has made weekend getaways more popular for couples, families and solo travelers alike. Travel back in time to the Highway 71 project. Highway 71 carries the same route number through Colorado, Nebraska, and South Dakota. Of this route, the section between Limon and Scottsbluff is part of the Heartland Expressway Corridor.I dont think theres a more iconic symbol of the American West than the bison.Ive been fascinated with bison for quite awhile, and it was so incredible to see them in their natural For as massive and strong as these animals appear, their existence is actually quite fragile.According to the Nature Conservancy, bison were almost entirely driven to extinction in the late 1800s, with less than 1,000 individual animals remaining. Parks, zoos and sanctuaries became safe havens and helped to sustain and increase their population. The first national preserve for bison was founded in 1907. Years later, hunting laws and other protective measures allowed the remaining bison to live, thrive and multiply. Today their numbers have rebounded. The current bison population of North America is approximately 400,000 animals, but accelerating climate change throughout the Great Plains may present the next major challenge to bison sustainability.Research by South Dakota State University has concluded that climate change directly affects bison by increasing thermal stress and decreasing forage and water availability, and inderect consequences of climate change include increasing distribution and intensity of parasites and several diseases that are known to reduce reproductive success. These stresses have been estimated to collectively reduce bison body size by 50 if global temperature warms by 4C near the end of the 21st century.Warming and drought may also result in declining productivity of the remaining grasslands of the Great Plains, which are the preferred habitat for both bison and cattle.Bison, and so many other animals, are vulnerable. I cant imagine a world where we cant travel to see them roaming freely.Im thankful to the national parks and organizations like The Center of Excellence for Bison Studies, the National Bison Association and the National Buffalo Foundation for the work their doing to protect these beautiful animals.
