Right now Jo the mule deer is no doubt enjoying her lush summer range, perhaps nursing her fawns, and not thinking much about the epic migration she just completed. However, were still amazed by the 150 mile journey she and her herd make, especially when you consider the many hills, valleys, and obstacles these deer walk through.

Thanks to a question from one of Jos fans, we put together this map showing the elevation difference between the Red Desert and her summer range. Surprisingly, its only a 750 foot increase from start to end, but with a lot of hills, river crossings, and stopovers in between.

Its a good illustration that elevation alone doesnt explain why deer make these incredible migrations.
The real story has to do with annual precipitation and atmospheric conditions, and taking advantage of different habitats in different seasons.

In the Red Desert, there can be less than 10 inches of precipitation a year, and most of that is snowfall. In winter, its windy, which blows off the snow and makes it less-energy intensive to get around. There is plenty of sage and mountain mahogany for animals to snack on, though neither is very nutritious.
