Concord house Massachusetts, tragedy struck

Just eight weeks before her husband, Franklin Pierce, was set to become president, Jane experienced a profound tragedy. On January 6, 1853, after the Pierces attended a family funeral in Boston, they boarded a train for Concord, New Hampshire, where they planned to pack up their household and prepare for their new life in the White House.The couple was accompanied by their eleven-year-old son, Benjamin. A few minutes into the train ride, just outside of Andover, Massachusetts, tragedy struck. An axel rod snapped, and the train slid down an embankment. In the course of the accident, Benjamin was struck on the head and did not survive.Just weeks later, still inconsolable, Jane was expected to travel to Washington, D.C. and take up her duties as first lady. Even before the tragedy of her sons death, Jane Pierce was a reluctant first lady. She detested politics and never wanted her husband to be president. In fact, his nomination and subsequent election surprised Jane.At her insistence, he had already withdrawn from most aspects of public life, leaving Congress in 1842, turning down an offer from President James K. Polk to serve as Attorney General, and declining to run for Governor of New Hampshire.
