Sherman salon first African American to own

Ive got exciting news to share. I have decided to part ways with Big Apple Hair Salon and open my own!!! Ive named it, Salon 22, in honor of my angel. She gave me the courage and strength to do more in life. Presley would have wanted this and we are flying 22 high and proud.

My grandmother was the first African American to be licensed as a cosmetologist in the city of Tucson in the 1930s. She was the first African American to own and operate a beauty salon in the City and the first integrated beauty school. She was very active in politics and Civic issues. She was appointed by three different governors to serve on state wide commissions. The City of Tucson built and named a senior living community in her memory.

My aunt has served in many community and civic organizations through the years. She was appointed by three different Los Angeles City councilmen to serve on community advisory committees. She served on the PICO neighborhood council for several years and was chair of the land use committee.

My father served in Vietnam and was an officer with the Los Angeles Police Department and my mother served on the affordable housing commission.I intend on following in their footsteps to live a life in service to my community.
