Bedford travel to enjoy a long weekend

Like many families, my girls and I are fortunate to be able to travel. And no matter where we go, its important to make every experience - even vacations - an opportunity to learn and grow.In January, we went to Key West to enjoy a long weekend. While we were there we visited The Truman White House and Earnest Hemingways home.

We were able to see his writing studio, learn about his activities in the community, and see some six and seven toed cats that call the property home. Many of the cats that live there are descendants of cats that Hemingway had.

Melanie Mead is an emergency department nurse at St. Lukes Hospital in New Bedford. As part of an article about nurses across the U.S. battling fatigue and moral injury, Mead told the Washington Post she and her colleagues are emotionally, physically, mentally tired facing a staffing and patient care crisis that existed before the pandemic and was made worse by COVID-19.

In interviews, nurses across the country describe plummeting morale during the latest pandemic surge, marked by utter exhaustion and growing workloads. Some thought the availability of coronavirus vaccines would alleviate the burden on hospitals. Instead, emergency rooms were swamped this summer and early fall, often filled with the young and unvaccinated. The crisis has exacerbated staffing problems that existed before the pandemic, leaving nurses shouldering increasing responsibilities as covid-19 patients fill their units. Some nurses are leaving hospital jobs for more lucrative travel nursing positions. Others are leaving the profession altogether.
