Tonight a group of residents of a mobile home community near Aurora Ave N withstood the cold and anxiously waited for a representative from the North Precinct Seattle Police Department to show up for them and hear the living hell these families have endured at the hands of a nearby encampment over a year now.

They gathered at 6pm, the time we hope someone will come, but they never did. At 645pm the morale of members of this low-income community was low, everyone once again feeling that were not important for the institutions that were told to believe in, but we struggle to trust.

As we waited with them, while socially distancing and wearing masks, we learned how people camping behind the Home Depot have stolen more than material things, they have stolen tools they use to make a living, propane tanks they use to cook, kids bikes, cars, clothes they see them wearing right in front of them, one even brandishing a machete during his break-ins, creeps lurking while their kids are outside, burglaries on a regular basis, and the list goes on, but most importantly theyve stolen their peace of mind and what makes this place a community the kids feel afraid and not longer can play outside as they used to.

It is so wrong that low income communities have to go through this everyday and the little they have, during this tough times, only to be taken by the action of some and the inaction of our institutions, with no accountability on either side, while poor working families get caught in the middle all people of color are important.
