Welcome to Chula Vista, the second-largest city in San Diego County.
A lot of interesting things are happening now.
With a beautiful developing waterfront, a new university under construction and a thriving economy, it's easy to see why residents are so proud to call this city their home.
This is Courtney Dwyer, all about Chula Vista, at the next Cox-San Diego intersection.
Welcome to the Chula Vista Marina. I am accompanied by our first guest mayor, Mary Casillas Alice.
You are a very busy woman at the moment, so we really appreciate your time. You were born and raised here in Chula Vista.
What does it mean to you to be the mayor of this city now? Well, this is a great honor and privilege.
I want to be the mayor of his hometown and the city that has been growing since then.
I was born with a population of about 10,000 people, currently two hundred and thirty-eight thousand people, 258 thousand people in Chula Vista.
So wow wow what brings you on this adventure? Where did you start? What did you think you would one day become mayor of Chula Vista? What happened, are you so happy? No! Oh, your vineyard started out with a lot of volunteer work, starting with volunteering at school when my kids were in school, but after they left and left home, I took civic engagement and became a member of a large non-profit organization. the profit is called the mana of San Condado de Diego.
All this led to social activism and, ultimately, to a run for the city council.
What are you working on now? I know this is a great question.
I think I will design so many things for the city of Chula Vista, one of our main projects is the waterfront, so we have about five hundred thirty-odd acres of space. This is allowed for development. Old industrial facilities have disappeared.
The waterfront power plant has disappeared, so it is ready for development, and we are working in partnership with the port to build a conference center and hotel here, as well as a luxury skyscraper, apartments, and a new Park for motorhomes and for our citizens a symbolic park overlooking the bay. you know people talk about it, there are a lot of them.
Well, they are really in awe of it, and it was a long time ago, and this is the result of various administrations really pushing the waterfront plan.
So I'm very fortunate that the previous mayor, starting with Tim, Deputy Nader, Padilla, Shirley, Horton and Sherrill Cox, prepared at this stage for this development.
They call Chula-Vista the city of big cities, and even more so I communicate with people here.
They really say they are a great community, you know that people just love their neighbors, they like where they work, where they play, where they play.
Everything tells us a little about it.
Why is it so special here at Chula Vista, and how did they create that feeling? Well, we have citizens who really value the environment here and in the area, they live in, and the city of Chula Vista has received numerous national and even international awards for our masterplan communities and how we have developed. these towns.
But here on the west side, too, there is this deep sense of community and pride in the community, and we are very diverse, and what is really great about our city is that diversity is spreading everywhere.
So that there is no specific area that you could call the Latin American or the Philippine area, or which you know, which you call, but that we all live integrated in our communities, and to be neighbors between us, there is a great understanding. ... and Friendship, how would you describe the people you serve other than those you just mentioned? Well, I would say that we have very motivated citizens and they really care about how the city develops and they are a community too.
