Located in the southeastern corner of Washington state, the three cities are Kennewick, Pasco, and Richland. Despite the problems of the national economy, the region continues to grow and prosper despite all the difficulties. One of the reasons is Hanford's influence. The Hanford site is home to a massive cleanup and is the area's largest employer, but for most, Hanford remains a reminder of the Cold War and the infamous Manhattan Project of 2009. Public tours were organized and the popularity of the tours was immense, and impatient citizens registered in droves. The first series of tours began within minutes of being available to the public and new dates were added soon after. Our current guide, Michelle Gerber, is a historian of the Hanford site and the author of a book on the interior, the legacy of the Hanford nuclear site during the Cold War. She talks about the tour and what to expect from her visit. Well now there are two types of tours: Reactor B spend two hours in the reactor and then they send them back to the city and this is very popular. We have callers from literally all over the world, and then for about five years we've been doing tours of the entire site, where the B reactor is one of the stops on the tour, and people are also very excited about it. There are people who are very disappointed that slot machines fill up so fast, but we encourage you to keep trying, some people have traveled across the country and even around the world to catch a glimpse of this unique piece of American history. As we absorbed the views, Michele says, we saw the beginning of the landscape's history and the meaning behind it. There are three very small towns, Richland White, Bluffs, and Hanford, and the government took control of these towns and relocated Hanford and White Bluffs, which had just been renovated. Only the remains of ancient buildings serve as a reminder of these communities and analyze the lives of the people who once called the area home. Our first stop on the tour is the Water Test Center, where a representative from ch2m Hill talks about efforts to test regional water systems in Hanford.
