Pittsburgh is an industrial city in Contra Costa County, California. The population at the 2010 census was 63,264. Pittsburgh is located on the southern shore of Suisun Bay in the East Bay area of the San Francisco Bay Area.
The city of Pittsburgh, founded in 1839, was first named New York Landing, then The Black Diamond, before citizens voted for Pittsburgh on February 11, 1911. The name was chosen to honor Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, as the two cities shared a common industrial heritage of iron and steel and mining. However, from 1891 to July 1911, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, became officially known as "Pittsburgh" following the standardization of place names across the country by the United States Geographic Names Board.
