Sacramento travel regions water and habitats take center stage

A state plan could put a SMART train station in Solano County and create the first passenger rail service along the traffic-plagued Highway 37 corridor.The plan would create an east-west connection for the Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit system, which runs passenger trains along Highway 101 between Larkspur and Santa Rosa.

Passengers would be able to travel from the Novato-Hamilton station through Sonoma and Napa counties before arriving in Suisun City. From there they would be able to connect to the larger Capitol Corridor network to Sacramento and San Jose as well the national rail system.

This lecture is a journey through the Sacramento San Joaquin Delta. We begin with native voices, then travel with Spanish explorers. Next we hear from Rancheros before from those searching for gold. As these riches dwindle, agricultural land is contested. Inventors describe machines to tame the Delta. Towns folk talk of growing communities, labor tensions and ethnic enclaves.

With prohibition, visitors celebrate escape. Then WWII disturbs the Delta. After the war, marinas become the hubs of conversation. Soon the regions water and habitats take center stage. Looking to the future, some imagine nature forcing new settlement pattern. Throughout, we encounter the famous and those lost to history, but each voice helps to define the Deltas sense of place.
