San Francisco Fishing passed away the Dead were playing a run of shows

I was lucky enough to have met and chatted with briefly, was a wonderful, eccentric San Francisco author who often could be found around City Lights Bookstore or around the Bay Area doing readings. Aside from poems, he wrote enchanting, weird, funny and confounding novellas, among them Trout Fishing In America, A Confederate General At Big Sur, The Abortion, In Watermelon Sugar, and more.

The week that he passed away the Dead were playing a run of shows at the Berkeley Community Theater and they played Hes Gone two or even three times, no doubt in his honor. They had been part of the iconic Haight-Ashbury community of the 60s together. I have another fond memory of him doing a great spot at the San Francisco Poetry Festival, where he had the audience in the palm of his hand with his goofy, spacey humor, like a cosmic stand-up comedian, and there was a lot of good-natured laughing and a huge ovation. I was going to ask the gentleman seated in front of me to remove his bowler hat, but when I leaned over I saw it was Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and out of respect decided to let him wear his signature look chapeau.
