Englewood Fishing driven residents and tourists away from our beaches

Recent local action illustrates that factual, respectful, and passionate dialog on local issues can unify us to create positive change in our community. Toxic algae blooms and epic red tide have caused a heartbreaking loss of sea life and a devastating impact on local businesses.

Sadly, years of environmental malpractice by Floridas elected leaders created the toxic stew that has driven residents and tourists away from our beaches, contaminated by the rotting carcasses of poisoned fish, dolphin, manatee, turtles and more. Few people of conscience can witness the fouled air and water without feeling angry and frustrated. Thankfully, many of us are unwilling to accept this as the new normal.

In DeSoto County, a massive phosphate mining operation was opposed by many Charlotte County activists, whose passion and presence helped stop the Mosaic Company, yet another big moneyed interest, from jeopardizing our natural resources with dangerous discharges into the waterways that traverse Charlotte County.

On Friday, July 27th, a Facebook event attracted hundreds to gather at Skips Marina in Englewood to seek knowledge and facts to combat the threat to their livelihoods and recreation. Fishing guides, local residents, and business people held constructive dialog seeking facts, solutions, and actions items. The next day, many of the same attendees gathered in Sarasota to protest the inaction of the incumbent Republican legislators.
